On Friday 13th September 2002, nine intrepid club members set off for Orkney, to dive the wrecks of the German Fleet, which was scuppered in Scapa Flow at the end of WW1.
With warm, calm weather and visibility of 15 metres the conditions were very favourable. During the week we dived most of the cruisers, a battleship (Kronprinz Wilhelm), and a block ship (Gobernador Bories), plus the F2 and barge. While this is regarded as ‘deep’ diving territory these wrecks are, for the most part, intact, and rise to between 10 and 20 metres from the surface. The cruisers lie on one side and given the good vis it is possible to see most of their superstructure (including the guns) from the highest point. Of course for those on the hunt for depth (Diane) there is the option of 35m plus.
Après diving activities were mainly centred on the pubs and hotels of Stromness where the food and entertainment was excellent. There was also plenty to interest the more culturally minded with many museums, craft centres and archaeological sites, such as the famous Skara Brae.
Many thanks to Lee for organising the trip and finding the Orca Hotel, which was our base for the week.
